9 frame analysis suggestions - the more you do the more marks I can give you individually!!!

Hi All

These are my top 10 recommendations for films that are excellent examples of Thrillers:

1 Memento
2 Fight Club
3 Rear Window
4 The Machinist
5 Inception
6 Usual Suspects
7 Leon
8 Enemy of the State
9 One Hour Photo
10 Seven

All these films demonstrate strong visual conventions of Lighting, Props, Locations, Characters & Story...and are NOT Horrors!

For your 9 frame analysis, watch the film complete.

The watch the opening & still the 9 frames from the opening (NOT TITLES) that best demonstrate:

  1. What is the purpose of the Opening of a Film?
  2. How does it set up Thriller conventions of characters, story, mystery, Engima code?
  3. What makes the audience want to watch the rest?

Comment on these questions and put on your individual blog

THE MORE FILMS YOU ANALYSE THE BETTER YOUR INDIVIDUAL MARK WILL BE.

I will be screening a selection of these over the next 7 weeks at Film Club

Thriller Conventions Title Tagging

IMP - Look over this link for homework

http://ocrmediastudies.weebly.com/g321-as-coursework.html

demonstrates what is worth the higher marks and lower marks on your blogs - i think you will be surprised!

remember the research & planning you have been doing is worth 20% of your whole AS grade - you need to justify this with the amount of work you are producing.

Remember to complete your production company logo design (as an actual finished product) eg blood bunny & your audience research

4hrs, per person, per week - H/W

AS Group Set Work for Session on Thursday

Hi All

I have spoken to Kieran, Adam & Maggs about the work for today so they may be able to help clarify the instructions on this post

3 Tasks to be completed by the end of the session by the 3 of you as a group (An hour and a half)

1 - Production company logo
(see recent posts on the blog for help with this, there are link to previous student examples, real institutional examples, etc)

  • Your task is brainstorm images, fonts, names & style for your production company that will be developed into a logo (an image with text)

Post this to your Blog

You have 20 mins to complete this task as a group

2 -  Research: Intended Audience (your Thriller film ideas)

Decide on who your Target Audience will be.

  • A collage of images with props, visual symbols and images of the target audience for YOUR thriller opening, what would appeal to them. There must be a definitive age & gender along with images of what content you will have in your film
  • Look through the previous post of how you could make this 'Creativity in Foundation Production' (as a poster? a mood board? A short video? A commentary over images?)
  • Write a commentary (brief) of who they are.

3 - Audience Research Statistics

Identify a range of thriller films from www.imdb.com

  • Click on the 'user rating' section & print screen the graphs.
  • Summarise the results - who is the biggest audience (age & gender) for these thriller films state WHY?
  • Add video clips from imdb & film posters to demonstrate how the content (violence, male or female protagonist, age of the characters & their occupations, subject matter etc) appeals to who you said the audience is (age & gender).
This should take you 20 mins with 3 students working on it - split the work up.

Upload this to your blog

Label all your work as 'research & planning', remembering to label the name of who worked on it

4 - Blogged onto the site for next week - Individual Homework 1hr

1. Each student to post a mind map for a film opening sequence synopsis (individual) with images/video clips

  • Characters? (A.D.U.L.T.S. T.H.R.I.L.L.E.R.)
  • What SUB GENRE of THRILLER & what happens? (A.D.U.L.T.S.)
  • Where is this scene set, what locations? - include photos/images of suitable (A.D.U.L.T. T.H.R.I.L.L.E.R.)
  • How is it setting up the CONVENTIONS of a Thriller PLOT?
  • What 3 Thriller films you have watched have influenced this/ what is it similar to?

Above all it must be an idea for a THRILLER (no horrors, hoodies, woods, schools, your bedroom etc)

2. Add Images to the post from/of the 3 Thriller films that have influenced this along with clips from www.IMDB.com

3. Improve & Complete any outstanding work from Mod 1 - see previous blog posts & links to 'what success looks like' to see what you need to do.

Thanks
Mr.B
